Summary

England’s three-day win over Pakistan at Headingley offered an early look at what may work in Joe Root’s second stint in charge, but the match also underlined how much of the evidence was shaped by Pakistan’s poor performance. Assessment

The clearest cricketing takeaways are conditional. England’s four-seamer attack can work in the right conditions, and Root looked sharper and more decisive at the helm, but neither point can be overread after a game in which Pakistan repeatedly made basic errors with bat and ball. Harry Brook’s innings also looked more controlled than usual, even if he still fell short of a hundred.

Limits

England’s batters created chances to turn starts into centuries, but Jordan Cox and Dan Lawrence both missed out when big scores were there to be made.
