IRDAI bars Edelweiss, Pramerica from opening new branches
What Happened
IRDAI has barred Edelweiss Life Insurance and Pramerica Life Insurance from opening new places of business for six months after finding both companies breached the regulator’s Expenses of Management limits in 2024-25. The orders, issued separately on August 20, came after off-site monitoring and enforcement proceedings.

Compliance Impact
The restriction limits expansion, but it is not a licence suspension. IRDAI is using branch-opening curbs to push insurers to control operating and distribution costs, which the regulator says should be kept within set limits so efficiency gains reach policyholders.
