Paradip Port Gets Rs 2,008 Crore Capacity Push
What Happened
Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated seven projects at Paradip port and the port authority signed concession agreements for three more mechanisation projects, taking the new investment push to just over Rs 2,000 crore. The package is aimed at deeper berths, faster cargo handling and smoother truck movement at one of India’s busiest bulk ports.
Business Impact
The biggest operational change is the dredging programme, which takes Paradip’s draft to 18.5 metres and should let fully laden Capesize vessels enter the inner harbour. That matters because larger ships can move more cargo in fewer voyages, while mechanisation is meant to cut vessel turnaround time and logistics costs.
Counterpoints
Paradip already handled 156.45 million tonnes in FY26, so the port is expanding from a strong base rather than rescuing a weak one.
The promised gains still depend on execution: the new systems, bridge access and private mechanisation projects have to work together for congestion and turnaround times to fall.
