Jadavpur University clashes deepen over student politics and campus violence
What Happened
Clashes at Jadavpur University in Kolkata escalated after ABVP activists entered the campus in the early hours of August 20, tore and burned Left student union posters and damaged university property. The confrontation began a day earlier over a general body meeting and then widened into a larger standoff between ABVP and Left student groups, including SFI.
Institutional Impact
The fallout has already moved beyond student rivalry. Jadavpur police have registered multiple FIRs, the university has set up a three-member inquiry committee, and the vice-chancellor’s complaint alleges arson, vandalism and intimidation by unknown outsiders. The damaged university emblem has since been restored.
Competing Views
ABVP says its supporters were manhandled first and that Left groups had no right to call the meeting because no student union exists at the university.
CPI(M) and a Trinamool faction aligned with Mamata Banerjee have both blamed the ABVP side, while one BJP minister warned of further 'surgical strikes' and another blamed the situation on professional politicians hijacking student agitation.
