UN Welcomes Sri Lanka’s Refugee Return Plan

What Happened

Sri Lanka has simplified immigration procedures to speed up the voluntary return of refugees living in India, and the United Nations has welcomed the move. The change is aimed at people who fled during Sri Lanka’s civil war and still live mainly in Tamil Nadu.

Affected Groups

About 90,000 Sri Lankan refugees are still in Tamil Nadu, while around 18,000 returned home between 2002 and 2022. The practical obstacles are not just travel paperwork: many families have spent decades in India, so livelihoods, documents and long-term legal status will shape how many can actually go back.

Perspectives

Marc-Andre Franche, the UN resident coordinator in Sri Lanka, said the Cabinet’s decision is a key step toward a safe and dignified return.

The UNHCR will continue to help with return and resettlement, but the article does not say how quickly the new procedures will be implemented or how many people they may bring back.
